I know a lot of them, but sadly, not all 500. I substitute sweetheart or sunshine when I can't come up with a name immediately. When it's really obvious that I don't know their name and their feelings are hurt by that, I tell them, "I'm sorry, but you know what it means when I can't remember your name? It means you are a good kid. I haven't had to fuss at you so much that I know your name without having to think about it." That helps a bit, but it makes me angry with myself that I take so much longer to learn the good kids' names than I do the ya-hoos' names.

I'm not familiar with that one, but I'm thrilled you found my post. Definitely going to have to share that with my class next time I see them--although they might think I'm messing with them!

Dear Book Fairy,
Glad you and your students enjoyed THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF. It is one of my favorite read-a-louds. I love the artwork, too.
Say hello to your class for me!
Like your name, too. There is a "Library Fairy" in my book CLAIRE AND THE UNICORN, HAPPY EVER AFTER. Do you know it?

This is so true! The worst is when a parent makes excuses for the child and tries to get the child out of trouble.
